44% of Languages Endangered, Cultural Loss at Stake

Forty-four per cent of human languages are endangered, risking the loss of culture and understanding. The Ubykh language, once spoken by tens of thousands, became extinct in 1992 with the death of its last fluent speaker. Predictions indicate that language loss could triple over the next 40 years without intervention.
